European Commission to Zero Discrimination Association Wins Second Prize in Roma Integration

The second place in the “Roma Integration Award” given by the European Commission was awarded to the project called “Public-NGO Dialogue Group for Roma” by the Zero Discrimination Association.

At the Roma Summit held in 2013, the European Commission decided to give the “Integration Award” to civil society organizations that develop projects that will facilitate the integration of Roma living in the Balkans and Turkey into society, starting in 2014, and the first award ceremony was held in Brussels on October 3, 2014.

The opening speech of the award ceremony was given by Stephan Füle, the EU Commission Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy. In his speech, Füle stated that civil society has an important role as a bridge between the government and citizens and emphasized the importance of economic and social integration for the Roma./p>

The European Commission’s 2014 Roma Integration Turkey First Prize was awarded to the Sulukule Children’s Art Workshop, which was established by Roma youth to promote and keep alive the music and culture of the Roma neighborhood Sulukule, which was demolished in 2009 under the name of urban transformation. The second prize was presented to Erdoğan Şener, who attended the ceremony on behalf of the Zero Discrimination Association, by Stephan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy of the EU Commission. During the ceremony, the purpose and content of the “Public-NGO Dialogue Group” Project were introduced as follows:

“Zero Discrimination Association; The multi-layered and multilateral cooperation mechanism initiated to ensure full participation of Roma in social, economic and cultural life in Turkey is based on four simultaneous series of studies:

Opening dialogue channels to create a favorable environment where representatives of Roma (Roma, Dom, Lom and Abdal) civil society organizations across Turkey and official authorities can work together
Conducting field research with the support of grassroots organizations working at the local level and presenting the results of the work as feedback to government officials for the Roma Strategy to be established at the national level
Strengthening the working network and relations between Roma civil society organizations
Participating in the development of national policies that encourage Roma to have equal access to rights and Roma inclusion like other segments of society.

The project also contributes to the coordination and coordinated work between different ministries of the government by emphasizing that the approach to the Roma issue should be holistic and integrated.

The visit also included visits to many institutions such as the European Parliament, the United Nations Human Rights Council Regional Europe Office and the Roma Pride Center in Brussels.
